FAQ

Can Employees Be Paid Weekly in South Africa?

Yes. Weekly pay is completely legal and common, particularly for hourly, casual and shift-based roles like retail, hospitality, security and construction.

What's required for weekly pay

  • The weekly interval must be stated in the employment contract
  • Pay must be issued on the same day each week, consistently
  • A compliant payslip must be issued every week, not just monthly
  • PAYE and UIF must still be calculated and paid over to SARS, based on cumulative monthly figures

How PAYE works for weekly-paid employees

SARS tax tables are structured around annual and monthly figures, so weekly PAYE is calculated by annualising the weekly earnings (weekly pay × 52), applying the tax table, then de-annualising back down to a weekly deduction. Payroll software handles this conversion automatically — doing it by hand each week is where manual payroll tends to go wrong.

Switching from weekly to monthly (or vice versa)

Changing an employee's pay frequency requires their agreement, since it's a change to a term of employment. It's worth communicating clearly — moving from weekly to monthly pay is a big cash-flow change for an employee used to weekly income.
