3. SARS Tax Year Calendar

The South African tax year for individuals and employers runs from 1 March to 28/29 February. Two tax years overlap the 2026 calendar year:

  • Tax year 2025/2026: 1 March 2025 – 28 February 2026 — current year during Jan/Feb 2026
  • Tax year 2026/2027: 1 March 2026 – 28 February 2027 — new tax year begins 1 March 2026

Important: New tax tables from 1 March 2026

SARS typically announces updated tax brackets, rebates and thresholds in the February Budget Speech. Update your payroll system from 1 March 2026 when the new rates take effect.

4. South Africa Public Holidays 2026

5. UIF Reporting Deadlines 2026

UIF contributions are declared and paid monthly via the EMP201 (same submission as PAYE and SDL — due by the 7th). Additionally, employers must submit a UI-19 return to the Department of Employment and Labour:

  • Every time a new employee is engaged
  • Whenever an employee's remuneration or working hours change significantly
  • When an employee is dismissed, resigns or is retrenched

The uFiling portal (www.ufiling.co.za) allows online UI-19 submissions and bulk uploads for larger payrolls.

6. BCEA Pay Period Rules

The Basic Conditions of Employment Act does not prescribe a specific pay frequency but does require:

  • Weekly workers must be paid at least weekly
  • Monthly workers must be paid at least monthly
  • Payment must be on a weekday — if the pay date falls on a public holiday, pay the day before
  • Payslips must be issued on payday (Section 33)
  • Annual leave must be granted within 6 months of the end of the leave cycle
