Can UIF Exceed R177.12 Per Month?

No — UIF contributions are capped at R177.12 per month, per party. It does not matter how high an employee's salary is. Once their monthly remuneration reaches R17,712, the contribution stays at R177.12.

Why is there a ceiling?

The Unemployment Insurance Act sets a remuneration ceiling to limit contributions. The ceiling is adjusted periodically by the Minister of Employment and Labour. The current ceiling of R17,712/month has been in place since 1 October 2012.

What about SDL — is that also capped?

No. SDL has no ceiling. SDL is 1% of all leviable remuneration with no upper limit. A salary of R100,000/month generates R1,000 in SDL every month.
